About Anita Thomas
The arts and creative world have long been a part of my life - beginning with painting and illustration from a very young age, taught by my artist father, to a 25-year career in fashion design and pattern-making in the high-end of Toronto's fashion industry.
I have returned to making art for art sake rather than art for my job. Locally, there will be those who know me more for my aerial and aviation photography, but I am often inspired by that which I have captured in photos and look forward to reinterpreting them through painting, whether it be in acrylics or my absolute new love, encaustics - an ancient technique of hot wax painting dating back over 2500 years.
I love the properties of the beeswax mixed with resin. My vintage warplane encaustics are made with natural beeswax I've bought directly from a local beekeeper. Although I've filtered it many times, the natural, local pollen that remains gives it the perfect vintage look. It is rubbed ever so slightly with gold metallic oil-based pastels and pigments to pick up some of the beautiful textures obtained in working with the encaustic medium. I love the richness of texture as well as the look and smell that this medium gives my photo encaustics and painted encaustic artworks.
From gorgeous old warbirds to the natural or industrial beauty found in the Hamilton and surrounding area, I am so thankful to be living in such a rich environment that I can enjoy through both my photography and painting.
